Tips for Maintaining Your Laptop

Nowadays, many people are using laptops for their school work, business or leisure. However, laptops can lose their efficiency if not well-maintained. The following are some tips which will help enhance your laptop usage.

1. Watch out for dust
To ensure your laptop remains effective for a long time, you need to protect it from dust. An accumulation of dust in your laptop could block the ventilation areas and result in overheating. It is therefore very important to keep your laptop from being exposed to dust.

2. Keep it cool
Besides dust, it is also very important to protect your laptop from excessive heat. A laptop used in a cool, dry area will work more effectively and faster than if it was exposed to heat. To protect your laptop from overheating, avoid using it on your lap, bed or cushion since this will block the vents underneath which help in cooling. The best solution for this is to use a lap tray as a base for your laptop. Alternatively, you can invest in any of the laptop coolers which are sold in most computer stores.

3. Install a firewall and antivirus software
If you don’t use any antivirus , your laptop remains vulnerable to being infected by a virus . Make sure you use proper antivirus software to protect your laptop and keep it effective for longer. You should also install a firewall so as to restrict access to your laptop. A firewall will alert you anytime an external entity tries to access your laptop. You will then have the option of either blocking or allowing access. In addition, you need to be cautious about using external hard disks and flash disks with your laptop.

4. Eliminate unused programs
At times, you might have some programs in your laptop that you don’t really need. It is advisable to uninstall them so as to create more space in your hard drive. This will enable you to install other important applications and programs. Eliminating unused programs will also improve your laptop’s performance and make it easier to locate important files.

5. Defragment hard drives
When you have many programs in your laptop, it will take time to locate your important files. It is therefore very vital to defragment your drives frequently. De fragmenting will arrange your files in a way which makes them much easier to access.

6. Clean your registry
Once in a while, registry files might get corrupted thus resulting in a drastic and sudden change in your laptop’s performance. Make sure you run your registry cleaners frequently to find out if there are any corrupt files or errors.

7. Minimize programs to run during startup
Whenever you start your laptop, it will load all the system files, as well as the programs which have been selected to run during startup. The more programs you run, the longer it takes to startup. You should therefore minimize the number of programs that will run during the booting process.

8. Delete temporary internet files
Slow browsing speeds are often as a result of poor internet connection. However, in some cases, it might be due to too many temporary internet files saved in your laptop. You should therefore take time to delete such files from your laptop.

9. Empty the recycle bin
When files are deleted from your laptop, they end up in the recycle bin. This means that they are not actually deleted from the laptop; they have just been transferred to a different location. Thus, they still take up space in your hard drive. It is therefore important to empty your recycle bin as often as possible.

10. Power surge protection
Power surge protection is as important for laptops as it is for desktop computers. Replacing a laptop power supply is very costly compared to investing in a power surge protection device. Make sure you get one so as to protect the laptop itself, as well as your laptop power supply.

PASSWORD PROTECT YOUR WORD FILES

We all use Microsoft Word to create documents and some times we dont want other people to access our documents specially when you are on a shared computer in your company and you may have your certain secret data stored in your word document that should not be accessed by your boss or other employee’s.

To deal with such a situation Microsoft word 2007 integrated a security feature in Microsoft word so that you can password protect your files.

just follow these simple steps to make your document protected

Click on the Microsoft Office Button present on the top left corner of the window.
Now Click on the Save As option
Now a new window will pop up.
Click on Tools option at the bottom of the window.
Now you will have two options.
You can select either one or both options
One is Password To Open it will ask for the password every time the document is opened.
So to view the document you have to enter the password first.
Second is Password To Modify it will ask for the password every time somebody tries to modify the document.

HIDE DATA IN MOBILE WITHOUT ANY SOFTWARE

Have you ever wanted to hide folders in your phone? If yes, there here is very interesting solution for you to hide folders in your phone and you don't even need any software for that.
This trick can be used for any JAVA phone from Nokia,Samsung,Motorola,LG or any other company.

JUST FOLLOW SIMPLE STEPS
  1. Create any new folder or you can use any existing folder that is to be hidden.
  2. Rename the folder to any name but with the extension of .jad like if I want to hide my images folder then I will name it as IMG.jad
  3. Now create a new folder with the same name in the same directory but with the extension of .jar So, I would create the folder with the name IMG.jar
  4. And thats it!! My orignal images folder which has been renamed with .jad gets hidden and only folder with .jar extension is visible which is empty. So,my data is protected/hidden from unwanted eyes.

To unhide the orignal folder you have to remove the .jar extension from the new folder and your orignal folder with all the files and with .jad will become visible.

How The Strong Password Security Is Maintained !!!

Too many internet users are making poor decisions when choosing their passwords. We've spoken time and time again about the importance of choosing hard-to-crack, unguessable, unique passwords that (provided the website you are using looks after its databases properly) will make life very difficult for password crackers. And yet, people continue to use passwords that are - quite frankly - dumb, and then compound the problem by using the same simple password in multiple places.

Scandinavian security blogger Anders Nilsson spent a little time with the Pipal password analysing tool, running it against the 450,000 plaintext passwords snatched by hackers from Yahoo Voices. And what he found doesn't inspire much confidence that users are getting the message about password security.

         Repeat after me.
"A password of 'password' isn't actually a password."
And neither is "123456" or "welcome" or "qwerty" going to prove anything of a challenge to a hacker. The fact is that every time password lists are stolen and published on the internet, hackers add them to their own databases for their password crackers to try next time they want to break into an account or crack a hashed password.

Your passwords need to be unique, and hard-to-crack. That means not using dictionary words anymore, and not imagining that no-one else in the world has thought of "qwertyuiop" or "password1234". The typical response from the average internet user is "But how will I remember all these different, complicated passwords?"Simple. Use a decent password management program.

There are a few to choose from, and some of them are even free. Software like 1Password, KeePass and LastPass can remember all your different passwords on your behalf, store them securely, and even generate complicated passwords for the next website you join.
Clearly the responsibility isn't all in the court of the user, however.

Not only should websites take greater care about securing users' information (for instance, not storing passwords in plain-text or as unsalted hashes), but they could also do more to ensure that users choose trickier passwords.I'd like to see more websites check the passwords chosen by their new users, by running them against a database of commonly used passwords and a dictionary. If the password users enter is too common, or an obvious sequence, or doesn't obey sensible password rules about complexity or length, then it should be rejected and the user told to try again. When websites tell you to change your password following a security breach, they should also tell you to choose a hard-to-crack, unique password. Otherwise, what's to stop the new password being "abcdefg"?It would be a safer world if websites policed the passwords that are submitted by users, and weak choices thrown out.

And it's not just users who need to have strong passwords. The website's staff need to have sensible, hard-to-crack passwords as well.In early 2009, for instance, a hacker was able to break into Twitter accounts belonging to celebrities because he had broken into Twitter's administrator's console.

If you already know this about passwords - great! But be a goodsamaritan, and share the advice with your family and friends. We need to get everyone to understand the importance of better password security.Yes, even the "princesses" and "ninjas".
